Strong Towns Is Seeking Two Part-Time Community Building Interns
This application process is currently paused.
Strong Towns, a nationally recognized non-profit organization, is seeking two part-time, paid Community Building Interns to connect prospective Local Conversation group leaders with the resources they need to successfully start a group in their community.
The mission of Strong Towns is to replace America’s post-war pattern of development, the Suburban Experiment, with a pattern of development that is financially strong and resilient. We advocate for cities of all sizes to be safe, livable, and inviting. Starting and supporting Local Conversation groups (which consist of Strong Towns advocates in cities and towns across the country) is a central part of our strategy to mobilize people to take action. We work to elevate local government to be the highest level of collaboration for people working together in a place.
Our goals are wildly ambitious, but we’ve made meaningful progress:
Our media site reached over 2 million people last year and is shaping the national conversation on growth, development, and the future of cities.
Over 4,800 people across the world financially support Strong Towns as members, including at least one person in each U.S. state.
We started the year with 87 active Local Conversations groups, with hopes to grow that to 150 by the end of the year and 1,000 by the end of 2025. As of this moment, we have 164 active Local Conversations with over 800 in the formation process.
Each day, we witness Strong Towns members step up and do extraordinary things in their places to make them more prosperous.
We need someone to help us make contact with prospective Local Conversation leaders. This could be you if:
You enjoy talking to new people and picking up the phone to call a stranger doesn’t intimidate you.
You communicate easily with different sorts of people and enjoy helping others learn and grow.
You’re excited to be the first point of contact for folks who want to mobilize others to take action in their community.
You're interested in community building—and in particular how an international movement gets activated at the local level, often in places that are very different from one another.
You’re interested in learning how to scale up a non-profit organization by participating in an internship designed to introduce you to the distinctive way that this non-profit operates.
You’re motivated to be part of a nonpartisan nonprofit that works across political, social, and cultural differences to help people make their cities and towns more economically resilient.
This is a remote position open to anyone in the U.S. Our team collaborates digitally from locations around the country. We have content deadlines and occasional event-driven demands, but generally keep a flexible schedule. You will be welcome (but not required) to attend our staff retreats and National Gathering. If you do join us, we will cover your travel and lodging costs. We are an equal opportunity, family-friendly organization. Our work is rewarding, and our organization is making a difference.
Our Hiring Process
Talent comes from many places, even those where we might not think to look, and so we've created a process that is broad, inclusive, and as free of human bias as we can reasonably make possible. We're looking for the person with the right set of skills and approach. As such, our hiring process focuses on skills and approach.
We don't want to see your resume, or even know who you are, until we determine that your skills and approach might be a good fit for our team. If you mail us your resume, or contact us with your credentials, you'll be signaling to us that you are not a good fit for the way we work. Beyond that, we encourage anyone with an interest in this position—regardless of any other factor—to apply.
