Making Mobility Visible: Transportation Advocacy, Social Media, and Organizing in Memphis | Local-Motive Tour

Transportation problems are often hiding in plain sight: unsafe crossings, unreliable transit, missing bike connections, dangerous streets, and public decisions that shape how people move through their city every day. In this session, Kelsey Huse, known online as Memphis Bicycle Girl, will share how she uses storytelling, social media, and grassroots organizing to bring these issues into public conversation and mobilize people around safer, more accessible transportation choices.

Drawing from her advocacy work in Memphis and beyond, Kelsey will explore how local advocates can connect street safety, public transportation, clean air, housing, and public policy in ways that feel immediate and understandable to residents. She will discuss how online platforms can be used not just to raise awareness, but to document lived experience, challenge harmful assumptions, build momentum, and invite more people into civic action.

This session will look at how transportation advocacy can become more visible, more creative, and more effective when advocates meet people where they already are: on their streets, in their neighborhoods, and in the conversations happening online. Participants will hear how Kelsey approaches difficult or overlooked topics, builds public attention around mobility issues, and helps turn frustration into organizing energy.

Participants will come away with practical ideas for using storytelling, social media, and community conversation to advance transportation advocacy in their own cities.
