Drive like your kids live here

A brand new stroad in Macungie Borough, PA -- so designed at 36 feet wide because that is what the standards call for -- with a posted speed limit of 25 mph.

What are we trying to communicate to drivers? Go fast, there's plenty of room....No, just kidding. Slow down! And note the visual prozac (decorative lights scaled to cars).

The saddest thing here is that someone felt compelled to purchase and place a Drive Like Your Kids Live Here sign.

What are we expecting? We design a highway cross section and we're surprised when we get highway speeds? There is no sign or speed regulation that will overcome natural human reaction to this design. If we truly desire automobile speeds of 25 mph, then this is engineering malpractice.

Instead of drive like your kids live here how about design like your kids live here.
